After playing one season with his home town Junior A team, Yzerman was drafted by the Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League, and played center for them for two seasons (1981 to 1983) before getting drafted to the National Hockey League. He was selected fourth overall by the Detroit Red Wings at the 1983 NHL entry draft.
